What is VKL

The Village at Kentlands & Lakelands (VKL) is not a building but an organization.  It is based based on a belief that older adults want to remain independent and age with confidence, knowing that getting older means living a healthy and interesting life.

VKL began as a pilot program in November of 2016 after a one and a half year planning process and a survey of the communities.  Since then, we have enrolled many residents as members and volunteers.

Why is VKL so important?

Many people assume that older adults have health and mobility issues.  However, many people who are retired or close to retiring are energetic adults interested in living their life with purpose.  As such, VKL offers an array of programs, events and social clubs that fuels that passion. Examples include presentations on a variety of relevant topics, theater productions, happy hours and musical events, to name a few.  While some of our events are open to Kentlands and Lakelands residents, many are open just to VKL members and volunteers. Click on Services and Programs on our menu to learn more about our many offerings.

Who are the members?

People served by VKL are residents living in Kentlands and Lakelands who are 55 years of age and over.

What support services are provided?

VKL provides services including transportation, help with minor household chores, social visits, technology support, and accompanied walks.

Who are the volunteers?

Volunteers are at least 18 years of age and go through a formal vetting and training process. Volunteers provide support services to members and participate on VKL committees. Many of our volunteers are also members.

How can I become a member and/or volunteer?

It’s easy.  Click on Members or Volunteers on our menu.  You can also contact Jean Mocarski ([email protected]) or call 240-449-9002 who will help you get started.
